Although it’s now 2017, there are still many people who look down on others for launching their own businesses, believe it or not. Those from the traditional, old-school type of thinking believe that everyone must have a J-O-B (8am-4pm, 9am-5pm), instead of trying to improve themselves and become entrepreneurs. Then there are others who “encourage” people to start a business, then in the same breath tell them to get a job – instead of supporting their entrepreneurship journey. Family, friends and acquaintances always say “You started a business? That’s great! What are you doing?” But I bet when you respond and follow-up with “I’m doing some promotion and seeking new clients. Could you help me get the word out and keep me in your list of referrals?” you’re greeted with crickets. And I’ll bet you again that whether you offer a product or service, those same individuals need what you provide and want you to give them for free or a hefty discount. That’s right, forgetting that when they shop at the supermarket they can’t ask the cashier for discounts – they either take it or leave it. They forget or ignore the fact that you’re running a business.
The saying “Surround yourself with people who support you” rings true in every aspect of life, including business. Many who seem happy for you secretly fear your success. It’s up to you to decide what you want, focus on your goals, surround yourself with like-minded individuals and remove yourself from the naysayers.
How do you handle the obstacles that stand in the way of your business’ growth?
